The Signora delle Acque via ferrata, climbing a waterfall

There are many via ferrata in Trentino but at Passo del Ballino we have a really special one: the Signora delle Acque.

After a half-hour walk from the road at Passo del Ballino, you reach the start of the new Signora delle Acque via ferrata, where there is plenty of space to put on your harness. Opened in 2019, why is it so special? Because it guides you vertically up the side of the Rio Ruzza waterfall.

It almost feels like flying

As you climb the ladders above the abyss, crossing suspended walkways, the fresh water of the stream will accompany you all the way, perhaps even cooling you off on a hot summer day. The via ferrata is in a beautiful location and is well laid out.

The first part is easier, leading to a point where you can stop and take a selfie with waterfall, something for your Instagram followers!

From then on, until the top of the climb, it gets a bit harder with footholds, suspension bridges and some exposed sections. At the end of the via ferrata (around 45 minutes from the start, depending on how busy it is), there is a summit book which you can sign to mark your achievement before heading down the gentle track back to the start or, if you want, taking a dip under the waterfall!
