Mediaeval Alpine Castles
The castles which punctuate the landscape, dating back to the Middle Ages, recount the story of the Comano Valley.
Would you like to learn about our history, in places where valiant heroes once fought? Then you must visit the castles of Comano Dolomites, ancient fortresses which used to protect the whole valley.
Castel Stenico, with panoramic views over the Comano Valley
The castle at Stenico, one of the most important in the region, was owned by the Prince Bishops of Trento for centuries. Today, it houses exhibitions, concerts and events and is open to visitors all year round. Of particular interest is a valuable archaeological section devoted to local history and an exhibition of treasure chests from the collection of the Castello del Buonconsiglio museum in Trento.
Castel Restor, ancient ruins
Castel Restor stands in crucial position, where the routes connecting Banale, the Giudicarie valleys, Lomaso and the lower Sarca valley all meet. During the time of the wars between Venice and Milan, western Trentino was the scene of many fierce battles. As a result, Castel Restor was first occupied by the Venetian army before being razed to the ground. Today, the mighty tower still stands proudly among the ruins.
Castel Campo, a magical atmosphere in the forest
Castel Campo is a castle with ancient origins, the only privately-owned castle in the valley and still used as a family home. Dating back to the 9th century, it was home to the noble "Da Campo" family. Nowadays, it is owned by the Rasini family, who live there and use it to host a number of cultural programmes.
